wander print - Fifty8 Acres

Wander

September 13, 1997, just before midnight. I stood in the middle of US Highway 89 in northwestern Montana, feeling like I had arrived at someplace important and pivotal. A place that should show on a map of my life with the words Go here. Heavy, golden moonlight brought everything out of the shadows. Around me: the hulking shapes of mountains, slopes of land that curved down and back up again, a black ribbon of road. Far away, the light of one house. I had stopped the car for no other reason than to look. At the moon, at the sky, at this vast and wide open land. The night was big. The world was big. How many times had the wind that filled my lungs traveled along the curve of the earth? I breathed in, sure it told...

livingston potholder - Fifty8 Acres

A cabin, a nail, a story

Your cabin, just south of Livingston. The early snow calls for hot chocolate, and it’s your turn to make it. Any minute now, the other one of you will push a shoulder against the door and stamp snow off of boots before unloading another armful of wood by the fire. You slide the kettle off the burner and hang these potholders on that bent nail that you can’t bring yourself to replace. (Who put it there? How long ago? If only the nail could talk.) On that nail in this Montana cabin, these potholders look like they’re meant to be, but they’d hold their own in a shiny kitchen, too, wouldn’t you say? Simple cotton yarn, all dressed up with a 1 ½” silver berry concho. A bit of suede lacing makes it easy...

Wishing you a beautiful year…

As one year open its door into the next, we want you all to know how grateful we are for the enthusiasm, support and love you've shown to our little shop and to us over the last year. A lot of care and soul goes into each piece, and it's  wonderful to know that everything we make goes out to such lovely people. Thank you for being a part of our story and for letting us be part of yours. We truly couldn't ask for better company. All the best to you in the coming year. May it be your best ever....

Teton campfire with quote

Everyone’s a storyteller

The siren song of cooler nights and campfires sounds sweetest in these long, hot months of Arizona summer. Our thoughts are already leaning toward fall, and any excuse to find cooler weather is a good one. A few weeks ago, Glen and his brother took a road trip up to Jackson, Wyoming, to fish and hike and camp. I was happy to see them go and spend that time together, but I was envious of what you can see in the photo above: their campfire and that view of the Tetons. The way we gather around a campfire is different from any other way we arrange ourselves in groups. The uneven seating. The way we stretch to warm our hands or to roast marshmallows. The smell of woodsmoke, the crackle of fire. The...

Fifty8 Acres jewelry packaging

Brown paper packages tied up with…beautiful words (string, too)

Around here, because Fifty8 Acres is a small company, the distance between an idea to seeing it come to life is usually pretty short. This morning's packaging idea is a perfect example of that. Last week, I ran out of the craft paper envelopes I've been using for wrapping up jewelry, and I've been trying to come up with something a step or two (or more) above that. Something that would have a lovely wow factor to give you a beautiful moment in your day. (I think about that moment, because I want the world to slow down a little when you open a package from us.) Well, one thing led to another, as happens in the idea factory. A couple of hours later, and this. Since we put quotes on darn near everything else, it makes perfect...

Unfinished Song

It's such a personal thing to choose something to wear, and so it's a big deal to me when you take home a piece of jewelry from our shop, either for yourself or to give as a gift. These words that I add to jewelry mean something to me and I'm finding (as I knew I would) that they mean something to you, too. On their own, beautiful sentences can move us, but being able to hold those words gives them another kind of weight and power. As a touchstone—worn over that space where the heart lives, between soul and bone, the place where a sigh begins. These words that move us are sea and soul, wind and wild. The ground, gravity. Air. Anchor. A firefly that lights up the small...
